Moving Forward
It had been too many days since I've last seen my prized 70-200mm f2.8 lens, so it was with great joy that I received the news tonight that my lens was all cleaned up, restored to factory, and on its way (overnight, mind you) to my front door. Well, not so much my front door as much as the FedEx facility where I'll pick it up tomorrow. Regardless (or is it Irregardless?) the lens will be back in my possession, and not a moment too soon, as I've got an engagement session this coming Wednesday!
Sadly, my beleaguered 5D mkii also came back today, in exactly the same condition as it was when I sent it out a week ago. Mud still clung to the guts, packed in tiny crevices, taunting me and my expensive misfortune. As I sat staring at it today, I thanked the heavens that I've got such an understanding wife who was willing to cut a deal with me for the potential purchase of a new one. Normally, she'd have my hide over something like this, but was more than understanding and, pending a few precautionary steps, has agreed to let me "take out a loan" to get a new camera back into the fold.
What are those steps? They're actually things that should have been done a long time ago, and things that I plan on doing moving forward:
- Insure my equipment - This one is probably the most important. Had my equipment been insured, I would have been looking at a $250 replacement cost for the 5D, instead of the near-$1500 it's going to cost me
- Be a little bit more careful (this goes without saying)
- Book a few sessions to make up the cost of the camera
So, from here on out, that's what I'll be doing. I plan on posting a comparison of my insurance options in a future post, so if that's something that you're interested in, make sure to check back. In the meantime, if you have insurance for your equipment, or plan on getting some, I'd love to hear your feedback on the pros and cons of what you've used, and how the experience went.
